A headless body that is also missing a hand is discovered in the dump. At first it looks like the missing body parts are to hide the identity of the victim, but then carvings are found on the body and it looks like a ritualistic killing. This may be the biggest case that Detectives Adam Garrett and Carl Landauer have ever had, and as veterans they have seen a lot, but nothing like this before.

At first it seems pretty straight forward, when another student from the victim’s school becomes the suspect. He’s in a Goth band and had an interest in the victim, so detectives arrest him. Even though things are going smoothly something doesn’t seem right to Garrett and then a witch, Tanith Cabarrus, claims the boy is innocent and that she has had dreams about the murderer and that this isn’t the first victim or the last.

The killer is choosing the dates for the murders carefully and the detectives have only a month to begin to believe in the unbelievable and stop the next sacrifice in Book of Shadows by Alexandra Sokoloff. She was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for her first novel The Harrowing. This is her fourth supernatural thriller.
