They are an unlikely team. Phillip Bethancourt is part of the rich jet set with a model girlfriend, and Sergeant Jack Gibbons is a rising star in Scotland Yard but is solidly middle class and doesn’t have much luck with the ladies. Though seemingly very different the men share one passion – murder.
In the The Young Widow, a wealthy business man is poisoned, and all suspicions point to his much younger third wife. Her charms are not lost on Jack who finds himself drawn to her even though she’s a suspect, but fortunately Phillip is not easily swayed. As the investigation builds it becomes clear that not only are there other suspects but it seems that the young widow has her own questionable past.
This is the first book in a series featuring Phillip and Jack by Cassandra Chan. The next book is Village Affairs followed by Trick of the Mind and the latest is A Spider on the Stairs. These mysteries have the feel of the classic British mystery but are contemporary. Phillip and Jack make a good duo as they track down the guilty, and the stories are fun but without the fluff.
