Get up to 10 free books at the Friends of the Library Book Swap Bazaar April 27. Bring in books and get new-to-you titles to take home and keep. It's all a benefit of being a Friends member.

This is your opportunity to be a book peddler, trading books you have read to get books you want to read. On Saturday, April 27 from 1-3 pm, Marvin Auditorium will be transformed into a “book bazaar” for people to rummage for books brought by fellow book lovers. The Book Swap Bazaar also includes entertainment, refreshments and library information and demonstrations.

“In 2012, we replaced our spring member dinner with the Book Swap,” says Linda Hayse, Friends Book Swap chair. “Being able to bring in good quality books to trade for books you want to read is a worthy endeavor. It also helps build supplies for our other retail sale activities.”

The Friends are dedicated to supporting the library, providing quality used books, CDs, DVDs, etc., through the Chandler Booktique, book sales and online sales. In 2012, the Friends provided $135,000 in support of the library.

Swap/Trade Rules
■ The Book Swap is a member benefit of the Friends of the Library. If you aren’t a member, you can join at the door. Single memberships are $20 and Family memberships start at $30.
■ You can bring as many books as you want to donate. Make sure your books are in good condition and are a valuable trade.
■ This is a family event, so bring the kids and books to trade that will appeal to all ages.
■ You will receive a voucher for the books you donate.
■ Your book swap voucher allows you to choose new-to-you books (10 books total).

If you need more information, call Mary at 785-580-4445.

If you are passionate about your library and want to be part of supporting it, join the Friends.
For book bargains galore attend the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale, Sept. 14-16. Friday is "Friends Night," but you can become a Friend at the door. Find out what awaits you at the sale and where the proceeds go.

Book lovers will pick from for nearly 100,000 books on September 14, 15 and 16, at the Agricultural Hall at the Kansas Expocentre during the Friends of the Library Book Sale.

Traditional genres, like biography, arts, romance, mystery and children’s books, are priced at $1 or $2. A Premium Section (special edition, signed by author or like-new books) offers more value, with prices ranging from $3-$20.

The sale opens on Friday from 6pm-9pm to members of Friends of the Library, but if you buy a membership at the door for $20, you can get first pick over classic and the latest books, vintage records and favorite tapes, popular DVDs and CDs.

Saturday(9am-5pm) and Sunday(10am-5pm) are free admission days. The bargains get better as the selection becomes picked-over, so it’s important to keep coming back, especially if you’re a book hound. Sunday is a Bag Day, which means all the books that you can fit into a grocery sack (provided) are yours for $5/bag, excluding the Premium Section.

Book sale proceeds are donated back to the library for programs such as summer reading.

“Each book a person buys at the Friends Book Sale helps us put a new book in the hands of children and teens enrolled in our summer reading program,” Linda Hayse, Friends board president, said. “The book sale is a wonderful opportunity to become a Friends member and be a part of an organization that offers members-only activities as well as member discounts all year long in our Chandler Booktique.”

The Friends of the Library were able to contribute $100,000 to the library’s programs, services and collections in 2011 as a result of efforts of member volunteers who collect, sort and sell books in their store, Bag Day sales, half-price days and the annual September sale.

For more information, contact Mary Campbell at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library at 580-4445, or go online at www.tscpl.org/friends/book-sale.

On Thursday, Nov. 17, Linda Hayse, Friends of the Library president, gave her report to the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library’s Board of Trustees during their regular monthly meeting. Her report highlights included the activities of the Friends annual meeting, election of new board members, the annual book sale, the Chandler Booktique sales, and online book sales. She said as a result of their hard work, the Friends would be awarding the library $100,000 this year.

“I’m really proud of the volunteers and staff,” Hayse said. “This is a result of the re-organization we have gone through and the changes we have implemented in our organization, and how it has improved our book sale, Booktique and online sales. This work has made it possible to top our 2010 distribution of $82,500 to this year’s $100,000.”

Gina Millsap, Library CEO, said that the money would be used for funding needs not available in the operational budget, including library staff recognition, support in programming (summer reading, etc.), Sabatini Art Gallery events and art competition sponsorship, and community service plans to introduce reserves lockbox and/or dispenser in locations around the county.

The Friends of the Library, established in 1971, works to aide, promote, develop and advance the operation of the library. They have nearly 1,000 members and six staff who have three lines of business: selling used books through public events, retail store and online sales. The books come from donations from the community and the library. In 2010, the organization went through a process improvement and strategic planning that allowed the organization to work more efficiently and clarify goals.

“I could not have guessed that I would be managing this sort-of business when I became president,” Hayse added. “Alice Wurtz, our treasurer, has been invaluable with the advice and guidance she has provided. My ‘friends’ have made me look good!”

This coming weekend is the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale (September 16-18), a volunteer supported, year-long endeavor manifesting in one of the most popular and prolific fundraising events in our community. The Friends are critical partners of the Sabatini Gallery, as their generosity and hard work supports our competitions (The Topeka Competition 3D and The Printed Image 2D) and collection development (buying new art for the Library). The Friends celebrates its 40th anniversary this year!

About 52 for 150

Every object has a story, and stories build history. To celebrate 150 years of Kansas statehood we’re featuring 52 objects (or collections of related objects)—something new each week throughout the year—from the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library’s 130-year-old special, and permanent collections, that represent our collective state history and cultural diversity.

Our collections are available for teachers, students, researchers and general interest, and we hope this online video program will provide insight into what’s so “special” about Special Collections. Your library’s commitment to collecting art and preserving local history makes it possible for users today and in the future to have immediate access to invaluable research material and cultural artifacts.

Consider joining the Friends of the Library or the Friends of Art today. Your support will help fund exhibits, educational classes, speakers and art competitions. Contact the Friends of the Library at 785-580-4445 or by e-mail.

Book pickers will bargain for nearly 100,000 books on September 16, 17 and 18, at the Agricultural Hall at the Kansas Expocentre at the Friends of the Library Book Sale.

“Each book a person buys at the Friends Annual Book Sale helps us put a book in the hands of each child enrolled in our summer reading program,” Linda Hayse, Friends board president, said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to advocate for the library by becoming a Friend.”

A special feature is the Premium Collection with books priced from $3-$20 that are special edition, signed by author or like-new. For traditional genres, like biography and arts to romance and mystery, books are priced at $1 or $2.

The sale opens on Friday from 6pm-9pm to members of Friends of the Library, but if you buy a membership at the door for $20, you can get first pick over classic and the latest books, vintage records and favorite tapes, popular DVDs and CDs.

Saturday(9am-5pm) and Sunday(10am-5pm) free admission days and open to the public. The bargains get better as the selection becomes picked-over, so it’s important to keep coming back.

“The sale earns money to support essential library services. Supporting the library is the whole reason the Friends exist,” says Linda Hayse, Friends president.

The Friends of the Library contributed $82,500 to the library’s programs, services and collections in 2010.

For more information, contact Mary Campbell at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library at 580-4445.

The book sale is supported by: Kaw Valley Bank, Capital City Bank, BT & Co, Briman’s Jewelers, Community National Bank, Educational Credit Union, HTK Architects, Schendel Lawn & Landscaping, Dillons Stores and Hy-Vee.

The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library is a 21st-century, landmark library, and features the Alice C. Sabatini Art Gallery, the Millennium Café, Chandler Booktique, meeting rooms, and free computer and Internet access and training.

Library hours are Mon. through Fri. 9 am to 9 pm, Sat. 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday 12 pm to 9 pm.
