In a recent article posted on Businessweek.com Lynn Taylor, CEO of Lynn Taylor consulting discussed the value of job searching during the holidays. Taylor writes: “A common misconception says that because it’s the holidays, no one will pay attention to your résumé. In fact, even during times of high unemployment, when things slow down at the office there’s a golden opportunity for hiring to finally move to the front burner.”

Below are suggestions Taylor gives to help in job searching this holiday season.

Make use of social media for networking maximizes your use of LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.

When at holiday parties remember to present your professional self, make sure you don’t overdo it on the holiday beverages, meaning the alcoholic kind.

Take advantage of this slower time of the year and call the hiring manager at your prospective employer rather that emailing.

Dress is always important! Make sure that you are dressed appropriately for an interview. Always be aware of the importance of the first impression. In addition to your dress be prepared: bring a copy of your resume a pen and paper to take notes.

The American Cancer Society‘s most recent estimates for breast cancer in the United States are for 2011:

About 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women

About 57,650 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be found (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer).

About 39,520 deaths from breast cancer (women)

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.

The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is a little less 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 35. Breast cancer death rates have been going down. This is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now there are more than 2½ million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

For all of his life Gary K Clarke has had a mystical affinity with Africa–animals, people, geography, exploration with an emphasis on wildlife. Starting in the 1970s he led numerous groups on photographic safaris through the east, central and southern regions on the continent.

Gary emphasizes his upcoming program, On Safari with Gary K Clark, “is not just another travelogue; rather, it is a personal expression of my feelings and involvement with Africa and its various dimensions over nearly four decades.” Join Gary for a unique perspective on a fascinating yet misunderstood part of our world during his program Thursday, July 7 at 7pm.

SEE a real elephant tooth, HEAR Animal sounds of Africa, TOUCH a unicorn walking stick, and COMPARE a rhino horn with a hippo tooth and an elephant tusk. DISCOVER the most important thing to take on a safari… the answer will surprise you!

The American Heart Association has new guidelines for administering CPR to help simplify the process for rescuers and improve bystander response. Now, a 2 step process using Hands-Only CPR. Make It YOUR Mission by supporting CPR education:

Not enough people act when they see someone suddenly collapse and this leads to unnecessary deaths.

Only 32 percent of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from a bystander.

Go Red For Women is asking YOU to help encourage others to take action. If people see an unconscious adult, they should call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest.

For more information on the new CPR guidelines and to view the 60 second Official Hands-Only CPR instructional video, visit GoRedforWomen.org and for more information on heart disease visit the American Heart Association.

The library has many resources on reducing the risk and managing heart disease:
